After a fun day outside in the scorching Florida summer sun, the last thing you want to come home to is a broken-down air conditioner. Now is the time of year to make sure your system is in good shape – but if it’s not working correctly, would it benefit from some repairs, or should you replace it entirely? No matter which decision you make, AC Today is here to help.
Repair or Replace?
When faced with the decision to repair or replace your HVAC system, there are six factors to consider – age of the system, problems, repair costs, efficiency, repair frequency, and size.
Age
Older units are less efficient and come with higher repair costs. If your system is more than eight years old, replacing the system might be more beneficial. If your HVAC system is less than eight years old, it will likely be OK with some repairs.
Problems
If your air conditioner needs a minor repair, like unclogging a drain line or replacing the capacitor, it’s worth repairing it. If the blower motor, compressor, or condenser fails, replacing the whole system would be more beneficial.
Repair Costs
Our techs recommend using the 2,500 rule when it comes to repair costs. Take the age of your air conditioner and multiply it by the cost of the repairs. If the amount is less than $2,500, repairing would be more cost-effective than replacing. If it is more than $2,500, replacing the system would be the best option.
Efficiency
If your HVAC system has a SEER rating greater than 13, it is still efficient and may be worth repairing. Systems with less than 13 should be replaced with a higher rated unit to reduce cooling costs. And in 2023, the new lowest standard will be a SEER rating of 15.
Repair Frequency
Some systems only have a five-year warranty, but it could still be fixed if your air conditioner had less than two minor repairs in the last ten years. Consider replacing it if your system had significant repairs recently and still isn’t working correctly. With a new system from AC Today through our Stress-free Program, you get maintenance, repair, and air quality services included for the life of the unit!
Size
Systems that aren’t sized correctly to fit your home are prone to poor humidity control and premature failure. If your system is not the right size for your home, it is worth replacing the unit with one that better fits your home’s cooling needs.
