Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have my air conditioner checked?

Systems should be checked twice a year.  We recommend once in the spring and once in the fall. Maintenance agreements are available at a discounted rate.

What temperature should I set my thermostat?

The temperature at which you are most comfortable.  Most utility companies recommend 78 degrees for less energy consumption.

Is my A/C unit big enough?

There is no rule of thumb answer.  The best way to determine this is with a heat load calculation. Please call if you have any reason to believe your system is not sized properly.  We will send one of our Comfort Advisors to perform a heat load calculation on your home.

How often should I have to add refrigerant (Freon)?

You should NEVER have to add refrigerant.  If you have to add refrigerant to a system, this usually means there is a leak.  You will need a leak check of the entire system to determine where the leak is.

What can I do to help maintain my own A/C system?
The most beneficial thing you can do is Change / Clean your filter regularly (check every 30 days). We recommend Pleated type filters for better indoor air quality and longer equipment life.
If your system is equipped with a drain line clean out, we recommend flushing it with bleach to prevent algae build up and a potential clog.
Regular professional maintenance is still recommended twice a year

What is a S.E.E.R rating?

S.E.E.R (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is a rating that indicates how efficiently the system is engineered to cool your home.  The higher the S.E.E.R rating the less energy it will use to do its job.

Higher S.E.E.R = lower utility bill

How Long should an A/C unit last?

Normally you could expect a unit to last about 10 years.  Some systems may last longer due to limited use, others may not last as long due to high salt or sulfur environments.

Should I turn my system off during a storm?

Yes, power surges are much more likely during an electrical storm.  If your system is not protected by a surge protector (available for about $140),  you could run the risk of damage to your unit.

How long should it take to cool down a hot house?

Depending on the outside and inside temperatures, you can expect between 2-3 degrees per hour.

Does it help to close vents in rooms that are not used?

No, it may actually hurt the system to limit the airflow of the unit.  This may even cause compressor failure.

What should I set my thermostat to when I go away for the summer?

82 degrees, however, a de-humidistat should be installed. A de-humidistat allows the system to run only to de-humidify the air. This can save you money while still protecting against potential mold/mildew growth.

(de-humidistat cost: $150 installed)
